Mission and Vision

Purpose and Mission of the Department

To inherit and honor the spirit of Dr. George Leslie Mackay—“Rather burn out than rust out”—and his commitment to respecting life, caring for vulnerable populations, and fulfilling social responsibility, Mackay Medical University integrates the outstanding clinical services, research capabilities, and teaching excellence of Mackay Memorial Hospital to cultivate healthcare professionals who respect life and care for individuals with hearing and speech-language impairments.

Mackay Memorial Hospital, with nearly a century of history, stands as one of the most powerful embodiments of Dr. Mackay’s spirit. Its major pioneering contributions include: the establishment of the School of Nursing in 1913; the care and treatment of patients with leprosy across Taiwan beginning in 1924; the founding of Leshan Sanatorium in 1934; the establishment of the Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation Center in 1966; the Children’s Burn Foundation in 1988; the Hospice Foundation and palliative care wards in 1990; the Premature Infant Foundation in 1991; and in 1998, its collaboration with the Children’s Hearing Foundation to introduce the first free nationwide Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) program in Taiwan.

The establishment of the Department adopts a pragmatic teaching strategy that emphasizes both foundational and clinical education. In addition to building one of the most modern and comprehensive teaching environments and equipment in Taiwan, the Department works closely with Mackay Memorial Hospital—an institution with over a century of clinical service experience—to provide students with holistic training that integrates physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of healthcare.

The program not only equips students with the clinical competencies required in audiology practice but also fosters a deep sense of compassion and commitment to serving vulnerable populations, reflecting the love and care for humanity as an expression of divine compassion.
