Trends in Future Career Development

Future Career Development Trends of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, Mackay Medical University

    • Clinical practice as audiologists or speech-language pathologists in general hospitals.
    • Clinical rehabilitation services in public and private rehabilitation hospitals, focusing on hearing and speech-language rehabilitation.
    • Hearing aid fitting services in private hearing aid companies.
    • Work in private speech and hearing-related foundations (e.g., the Children’s Hearing Foundation, the Taiwan Women’s League Hearing Impairment Foundation), engaging in hearing and speech-language prevention and rehabilitation services.
    • Independent practice in private hearing rehabilitation clinics or studios (i.e., self-employment opportunities).
    • Participation in government education (special education units) and social welfare agencies (disability welfare services) in planning programs for individuals with hearing and speech-language impairments.
    • Occupational hearing conservation and industrial noise protection programs in labor safety agencies (e.g., Ministry of Labor).
    • Engagement in basic and applied research in speech and hearing sciences, including opportunities for overseas study, hearing aid research and development companies, or domestic assistive technology companies.
    • Opportunities to work in Mainland China, where formal training systems for audiology and speech-language pathology are still developing; Taiwanese-trained professionals may therefore contribute within the shared Mandarin-speaking context.
    • Opportunities in Singapore, where the population and land area are relatively small, local training programs in speech-language and hearing professions are limited, and Mandarin is widely used, creating demand for international professionals.
    • Starting from the 2020 academic year, the Department also admits students to its Master’s Program in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, thereby further strengthening academic research development in the field and providing graduates with opportunities for advanced study.
